The Human Spirit
Last week, I spoke about getting to know and understand your ExcellenceDNA™. This week is an extension of that, but goes a bit deeper. For those of you that turn your hearing off when it comes to subjects that sound maybe too religious for you, I hope you will keep an open mind and an open heart for the next 10 or so minutes. Today’s topic is about you, it’s about me; it’s really about each and every one of us, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or religious beliefs.
This past Sunday marked 15 years since the world woke up to an entirely different timeline and way of living. 9/11, whether you were born or not, tore down the walls of any innocence or naiveté that we once had. It created a mark in our entire human existence.
Just as many of you do, I remember exactly where I was standing and what I was doing when I heard the words “a plane has just struck the world trade center.” I say heard, because I was getting ready for work in my bathroom and had the TV on in my living room with the Today show. I heard the words, looked in my mirror and immediately ran to my living room. My brain couldn’t register what my eyes were seeing or what my ears were hearing. Time was frozen. The images I was seeing of people screaming and covered in dust, just made no sense. The rest of the day was a blur. I was numb and just going through the motions trying to understand all the emotions that were rushing through me and others that I was with.
Since that day, I’ve visited the World Trade Center 3 times and even as I’m speaking about this right now, I’m having to compose my emotions because I can feel the sadness, the sorrow, the sheer weight of it all welling up inside of me. Those people that lost their lives on that day are still telling their stories through each and every one of us that have the privilege to take another breath. When we remember them, we honor them. When you FEEL that connection with them, that is the human spirit connecting, in its highest form.
I’m not talking about your soul here. I want to talk about the human spirit. 9/11 is a day that every human being on this planet that had the ability to know of the events of that day – we all connected as one. In the terror, the horrific sites of the buildings, the people and the aftermath. Even in those awful moments, the human spirit that exists in all of us, connected. We were no longer male or female, black, white, Jewish, Christian or any other label – we were human.
Let us take hold of this reminder and not allow our human experience to have to evolve to the level in which we ever have to witness another 9/11. That IS in our control. I know deep down in your soul, these words I’m speaking resonate as truth. They resonate as truth because the human spirit that exists in all of us comes from the one true source of ALL love. It only knows good, it only sees light – no matter what confronts us, our human spirit comes back to THAT center of truth – LOVE.
The multitudes of heroic stories from 9/11 are irrefutable proof that our human spirit always wins and will always prevail. So, let’s get to the heart of it . . . What is the human spirit?
The human spirit is the intangible part of man. The Bible says that the human spirit is the very breath of Almighty God and was breathed into man at the beginning of God’s creation: “Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).
It is the human spirit that gives us a consciousness of self and other remarkable, though limited, “God-like” qualities. The human spirit includes our intellect, emotions, fears, passions, and creativity. It is this spirit that provides us the unique ability to comprehend and understand (Job 32:8, 18). Within the human spirit, at conception, is contained all that God intended us to have, to live and sustain life in our human form on earth.
Let me clarify briefly, the human spirit compared to the soul. The spirit of a human can be considered more like a fragment of God’s energy. It is composed of pure God-like spiritual energy, which is unlike any other form of energy. The soul, on the other hand, is a form of physical existence. You know this to be true, because you may grapple with your soul, but when your human spirit kicks in and takes over – it’s like everything inside of you is working in perfect harmony. The joy is unmistakable.
In doing research for this podcast today, I found an article that I’d prefer to quote because it was so perfectly written. Here’s an excerpt from that article from the Huffington Post by Lorenz Sell about the human spirit . . .
Each of us struggles with limitation in a very personal way. Without limitation, we would have no individuation. Humanity would be a canvas of even monochromatic brushstrokes. Our perceived limitations offer the kaleidoscope of human experience. The apex of our potential is where we find the full expression of our being.
. . . not being true to oneself. It is to diminish the human experience, settling for an easier life at the expense of our heart’s joy. We let ourselves down and sell others short the benefit of our full grace. Each of us is an example of what is possible and, by virtue of that, inspires greatness in others. Our greatest contribution to those around us is our own excellence.
Let me repeat that last sentence because it personifies my passion to Live Excellence and to illuminate the ExcellenceDNA™ that is our human spirit. “Our greatest contribution to those around us is our own excellence.”
I love quotes. They are like little vignettes on a much deeper subject matter. They resonate with us, because they speak truth to us – to our human spirit. Here’s a quote from The Message in the Bottle, by Christina Rasmussen –
The human spirit is stronger than any fate.
Any bad luck. Or bad circumstance.
It is made to love unconditionally.
To go forth with resilience.
And to overcome.
But we forget.
We forget that we are made to adapt and thrive.
Our ExcellenceDNA™ is our human spirit in motion. Our human spirit thrives – always. It knows no fear. It only knows love. It only sees possibilities. It is God, in us. Your human spirit is constantly calling on you to Live your Excellence.
We are all in this together. Every life matters. God gave each of us this amazing gift of the human spirit.
Thank you so much for joining me today and until next time – LIVE Excellence!
